Course objectives
The course introduces the issue of archaeological heritage, its content and structure, methods of its preservation, protection and presentation. It draws attention to its potential in relation to history of humankind and its relationship to natural environment from the beginning of development to the modern era, introduces archaeology as a scientific discipline, and provides a basic overview of its development and paradigm changes. It introduces archaeological heritage in regional reality (public administration; business and private sector, heritage administration). It pays attention to significant archaeological discoveries, their interpretation, and significance for interdisciplinary perception of history. It presents selected major domestic and foreign archaeological sites, from prehistoric to modern times, providing evidence of development of human society and fulfilling requirements for being included among client-interesting destinations, etc. It points out the growing role of archaeological and other cultural heritage in the field of education, organisation and implementation of leisure activities as well as in tourism (cultural tourism). It introduces experimental archaeology. Presentation of an archaeological site/heritage is part of the course.
Learning outcomes
Basic orientation in archaeological issues, monument care and relevant legislation. Knowledge in the scope of lectures and basic literature. Ability to apply knowledge in practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Terminology, methodology, sources, literature.
  • 2. Archaeology - basic characteristics of the scientific discipline, its potential in the region (applied research, rescue excavations, etc.).
  • 3. Research and professional institutions focusing on archaeological research, protection of archaeological heritage/findings, presentation (AV ČR, National Heritage Institute, universities, non-state entities).
  • 4. - 5. Archaeological heritage: chronological aspects, typology, important European and world sites, findings.
  • 6. Standard and special presentation methods (museums, archaea-open air museums, archeoparks).
  • 7. - 10. Example presentations of selected archaeological sites from prehistoric to modern era.
  • 11 - 13. Example presentation of current archaeological findings in the field in cooperation with regional and cross-border research and memory institutions (+ 1 day excursion).
