Course objectives
The aim of the course is to increase language and communication competences, work with professional foreign language information sources and creation English presentations in relation to cultural history and cultural heritage. The course is devoted to the issue of cultural heritage both in terms of factography and linguistics. The intention is to provide students with a basic overview and at the same time to expand and deepen their knowledge of special terminology in the field of Czech history, cultural, natural and archaeological heritage, UNESCO monuments in the Czech Republic, intangible cultural heritage and cultural heritage of Silesia. Attention will also be paid to the enrichment of vocabulary in the fields of architecture, painting, sculpture, literature, theatre, film and music.
Learning outcomes
A student will be able to:
study English information sources
prepare and present a PowerPoint presentation on a topic in relation with cultural history and cultural heritage
use special terminology adequately
use English in a correct way.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, literature, information sources, basic terminology, system of cultural heritage protection.
  • 2. Culture and cultural heritage – basic terms and approaches.
  • 3. Natural heritage and natural heritage protection; archaeological heritage, most important sites in the country.
  • 4. Architecture as a part of cultural heritage; basic styles, characteristic features.
  • 5. – 7. Religious monuments; castles and chateaux; town/village zones/reserves.
  • 8. Fine arts – painting and sculpture; museums and galleries.
  • 9. History of Czech music.
  • 10. Documentary heritage – history of literature.
  • 11. History of the Czech Lands.
  • 12. UNESCO monuments in the Czech Republic.
  • 13. Cultural heritage of Silesia – tangible and intangible.
