Course objectives
The course is designed as an overview, so in addition to factual information about the main developmental movements within the Czech literature of the 19th century. students will also get acquainted with specific works of selected authors.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to be familiar with 19th century literature; characterize basic works; interpret developmental tendencies.
Syllabus
  • 1. Periodization of literary history of the national revival. Which are milestones and problematic points? Who determines the periodization of literature? 2. The first stage of the national revival, journalistic activity, the influence of Dobrovsky's prosody. 3. The second stage of the national revival. Dobrovsky and Jungmann's significance. 4. Disputes over Manuscripts: over the texts of the RKZ. Versological, thematic, linguistic analyzes. 5. The third stage of the national revival I: K. H. Mácha: May. Thematic and versological analysis. Interpretation of contemporary acceptance. 6. The third stage of the national revival II: K. J. Erben: Bouquet: another form of Czech romanticism. Erben or Majesty of the law. Tradition and romanticism. 7. The third stage of the national revival III: J. K. Tyl - romanticism and the national community. Tulle and theater. 8. Literature in the fourth period of the national revival: Grandmother of Božena Němcová ad. 9. Literature in the 1950s. and Neruda's poetry. 10. Literature of the 1950s. and its position among the ruchovsko-lumírovská generation. 11. Ruchovské and lumírovské křídlo české literatury, S. Čech: Lešetínský kovář a Broučkiády. J. V. Sládek - poet. 12. Lumírovské křídlo of Czech poetry and J. Vrchlický (own work and translations). 13. Realistic and naturalistic literature. Great novels of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (T. Nováková, A. Jirásek, J. Š. Baar, J. Holeček, etc.)
