- Course objectives
- The goal of this seminar is to deepen students' understanding of the Czech grammatical system, with a focus on morphology, orthography, and selected topics in lexicology and syntax. Students learn to evaluate ongoing shifts in contemporary Czech, verify their status using reference resources, and—based on the material studied—anticipate the future trajectory of grammatical or orthographic phenomena that have not yet been codified. Emphasis is placed on the use of the *Internetová jazyková příručka* (Online Language Reference) and the Czech National Corpus. The state of contemporary Czech is examined within the context of its historical development; consequently, attention is also devoted to the Czech language as used by expatriate communities (where, for instance, certain archaic or unusual forms and expressions are preserved), the influence of foreign languages (such as the tendency toward indeclinability), and a comparison of the Czech language in the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will learn to evaluate current shifts in today's Czech, verify their validity in manuals and estimate the outlook of those grammatical or spelling phenomena that have not yet been codified on the basis of the studied issues.
