Course objectives
The listener will be introduced to the physical properties of the atmosphere, anthropogenic influence of the atmosphere, air pollution modeling, air quality assessment, effects of air pollution on human health, ecosystems and materials and methods of protection atmosphere and air.
Learning outcomes
After successful completition, the student will: - master knowledge of the physical properties of the atmosphere, anthropogenic influence of the atmosphere; - be able to model air pollution, evaluate air quality; - know the effects of air pollution on human health, ecosystems and materials; - have an overview of methods of atmosphere and air protection.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic information about the atmosphere. Composition and vertical division of the atmosphere. Solar and long-wave radiation. Sources of substances in the atmosphere. Transport of substances through the atmosphere, sinks and exits. 2. Air pollution. Physical, chemical and biological factors affecting air quality. Characteristics of air pollutants. Outdoor and indoor environment. 3. Atmospheric deposition. Physical, meteorological and chemical processes leading to atmospheric deposition. Deposition processes (wet and dry deposition). Atmospheric deposition on a local and regional scale. Atmospheric deposition in the Czech Republic. 4. Air pollution modeling. I have. air pollution models. Modeling of atmospheric deposition of acidifying agents. 5. Modeling of the ozone deposition flow. Measurement of ozone concentration. Use of the resistivity analogy for modeling ground-level ozone deposition rates. Measurement of ozone deposition flux using gradient and eddy covariance methods. Multiplicative deposition model. Stomatal ozone flux. Ozone deposition flux modeling. 6. Assessment of air quality. The role of monitoring in air quality management. Immission monitoring and monitoring networks. Air pollution limits (emission, immission, deposition limits). 7. Effects of air pollution. Effects of air pollutants on human health, ecosystems and materials. Exposure, critical levels and loads. Acidification and eutrophication of ecosystems. Natural and anthropogenic climate changes. Depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. Anthropogenic influence of tropospheric ozone immission concentrations. 8. Protection of atmosphere and air. Origin of emissions. Separation of dust and gases. Legal protection of atmosphere and air. Main international activities and conventions in the field of atmosphere and air protection.
