Successful completion of the course Physics practicum I - Mechanics and thermals
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
Acquaintance of students with the basic principles of electric and magnetic fields as part of practical measurements
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - build a simple direct current circuit and measure the basic electrical quantities on the resistor using both dial and digital measuring devices and verify the validity of Kirchhoff's laws - measure the electrical resistance of a resistor using different methods - connect and measure the galvanometer as a voltmeter and an ammeter; change the range of the relevant measuring instrument - determine the electromotive voltage of the primary cell, determine its internal resistance - verify the relations for the work of electric current - connect basic AC circuits with RLC elements and verify their characteristics - determine the basic characteristics of the capacitor - determine the basic characteristics of the coil - measure the basic quantities describing the magnetic field of a direct conductor, a coil and the Earth - measure Planck's constant from the photoelectric effect - measure the Hall constant of a semiconductor
Syllabus
  • Measurement of basic quantities. Measurement of voltage, current, resistance, power and frequency; verification of Kirchhoff's laws.
  • Calibration of the measuring device with a laboratory device; determination of the internal resistance of the meter; changing the ammeter and voltmeter range.
  • Measurement of resistance by deflection methods.
  • Bridge circuits.
  • The principle of voltage and current compensation and its use for determining the electromotive voltage of the primary cell.
  • Work of electric current; verification of the relationship between quantities describing direct current and alternating current (electrical calorimeter); gradation of the ammeter with a coulomb meter for hydrogen.
  • Experimental investigation of the electric field.
  • Behavior of some basic passive elements in an alternating current circuit.
  • Study of the capacitor; determination of capacitor capacity by direct method and RLC bridge; determination of the charge accumulated by the capacitor; change of voltage on the capacitor when changing its geometric dimensions; connecting capacitors.
  • Study of properties of magnetic fields; interaction of magnetic fields.
  • Determination of Planck's constant from the photoelectric effect.
  • Measurement of the Hall constant of a semiconductor.
