Course objectives
The course is mainly devoted to the basics of diagnostic and imaging methods using photon radiation in medicine.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, students should be able to:
- explain methods of photon radiation production in clinical applications,
- understand the detection and quantification of radiation,
- describe and analyze the interaction processes of ionizing radiation with matter and explain their roles in imaging,
- explain the key steps in medical imaging,
- recognize the advantages and disadvantages of different imaging modalities.
Syllabus
  • Sources of ionizing radiation.
    Preparation of radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals.
    Interaction of ionizing radiation with matter.
    Therapeutic use of radionuclides.
    Ionizing radiation detectors.
    Basic components of nuclear electronics.
    Scintigraphy - diagnostic and planar imaging method.
    Imaging methods:
    Single photon emission tomography - SPECT.
    Positron emission tomography - PET.
    X-ray imaging and tomography - CT.
    Hybrid systems.

Teaching methods
The course also includes practical examples of the possibilities of industrial X-ray tomography.
Assessment methods
Active participation in seminars and 100% of submitted homework approved by the teacher. Students should demonstrate knowledge of radiological physics during the oral exam.
