Course objectives
The course focuses on the connection between volunteering and social work, emphasizing the importance of volunteer activities as a complement and support to professional services. Thematically, it addresses the specifics of volunteering in the field of social work, including the particularities of social services management. The teaching includes meetings with guests from various volunteer organizations who will present practice from different perspectives. The aim is to motivate students to engage in volunteer activities, develop the skills needed to organize volunteers and involve citizens, encourage mutual sharing of experiences, and foster their reflection.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to: - explain the importance of volunteering for society, individuals, and organizations; - explain the specifics of volunteering in social work and social services; - formulate research problems and topics related to volunteering in social work; - describe the specifics of volunteer management in social services; - apply knowledge from the field of volunteer management when creating a volunteer activity, task, or project in social work; - critically reflect on the involvement of volunteers in the provision of social services.

1. Volunteering - basic terminology. Volunteering as a social phenomenon. 2. Research on volunteering - current state in the world and in the Czech Republic. 3. Volunteering policy. 4. Motivation for volunteering. Benefits of volunteering. Barriers to participation in volunteering. 5. Volunteering in social work – history, present, and future. 6. Volunteering in social services – current state, trends, specifics of volunteer management. 7. Inclusive volunteering. 8. Volunteering and intergenerational solidarity. 9. Youth volunteering. 10. Volunteering in hospitals. 11. Volunteering in hospices. 12. University volunteering.

Assessment methods
The student chooses one of the two alternatives to complete the course: Alternative 1: Completion of at least 8 hours of volunteer work and writing a self-reflection essay (emphasizing the significance of volunteer work for professional and personal growth). Length: minimum of 1 - maximum of 2 standard pages. Structure: description of the volunteer work, motivation, reflection on the benefits in relation to personal and professional development (with a focus on professional identity). Alternative 2: Writing a seminar paper on a selected topic; fulfilling ongoing assignments. The topic must correspond to the course content and be focused on a selected aspect or target group of social work. The topic must be approved by the course instructor. Length: 5-7 pages.
