Course objectives
The course objecives are to provide students with a comprehensive and structured insight into the issues, key concepts and aspects of general gerontagogy as conceived within the LLL, which they should understand as a basis for other courses, through the definition of the subject, functions, principles and objectives of the theory of education of the elderly, its content, forms, methods and means. Students also gain an analytical overview of the areas of the educational process, key competences of the subject and object of education, the conditions, principles, research methods, the relation to other educational disciplines and concepts.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students acquire and demonstrate knowledge of gerontagogy as a discipline, knowledge of basic theories in its genesis, they can characterize its subject, objectives, goals, content, forms, methods, principles and means to define the core competences of the subject and object of education of the elderly, as well as characterize the system of supporting disciplines and the key features of the adults’ preparation for ageing.

Professional skills: Students are well versed in basic educational issues of the elderly as embedded within the concept of lifelong learning. They are familiar with the relevant field literature, can locate, interpret and apply the gained information in practice.

General qualification: Students are able to perceive the issues of the development and continuous cultivation of the elderly complexly - in the context of both educational and borderline disciplines. They they are able to not only use and apply their knowledge and skills in practice, but also to independently develop and seek new knowledge, approaches and methods in relation to the needs of life and work in the field, to react flexibly to current circumstances, choose and adopt the right decisions, assuming responsibility for them as well.
Syllabus
  • 1. Key concepts, historical and causal relations of preparation for a healthy old age; family and preparing its members for old age
  • 2. The phenomenon of old age and ageing (ageing and age - a natural part of human life, individuality of ageing; international comparison of age structure of the population, the age structure and ageing in the Czech Republic
  • 3. Gerontagogy as a science, its constituting concept; the concept and subject of gerontagogy; dimensions of gerontagogy as a science
  • 4. Characteristic features of elderly population; biological and cognitive changes during ageing; the state and productivity of man in old age
  • 5. Competences of the gerontagogic educator, skills of the andragogue and of the gerontagogue applicable in the educational process (personal, professional and didactic, managerial, diagnostic)
  • 6. The development potential and roles in senescence; personality development in senescence; developmental goals in senescence
  • 7. Educational context of ageing; preparation for healthy ageing - a sign of a modern society; education throughout life in the context of LLL - the priority and the right of the elderly
  • 8. Andragogical basis of education of the elderly; andragogická base of the education of the elderly; basic determinants of effective education process of the elderly; vital mechanisms in senescence and the learning process in the elderly)
  • 9. Key components of education for the elderly; basic objectives and functions of education of the elderly; content focus of education of the elderly; principles of effective education of the elderly
  • 10. Forms of education of the elderly; methods of education of the elderly; diagnostics - supporting element of effective education of the elderly;
