Course objectives
The course objective is to equip students with professional qualification to provide direct speech intervention for children and pupils with diagnosed speech impediment. Attention will be paid to indicative diagnosis of language and speech skills, actions to support the natural development of speech and to the prevention of language disorders and prevention of reading difficulties. Emphasis will be on application of reeducation procedures and exercises.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students illustrates competencies of a speech therapy assistant
- students describe physiological peculiarities and risk manifestations in speech development in the context of language levels
- students explain principles of indicative speech therapy diagnostics
Professional skills:
- students can apply the means of indicative speech therapy diagnostics on children and pupils with risk manifestations in the area of speech development
- students provide direct speech intervention for children and pupils with simple pronunciation defect
- students implement the reeducation procedures as prescribed by speech therapist
- students plan and implement preventive stimulation programmes for the development of language and speech skills
General qualification:
- students are ready to cooperate with other professionals
- students provide legal guardians of children and pupils with symptoms of risk in speech development information on the availability of speech therapy
- students can search new findings in the discipline for their application in special education programmes and rehabilitation programmes
Syllabus
  • 1.-2. Comprehensive approach to the development of language and speech skills.
  • 3. Principles of speech therapy prevention. Specific skills and cognitive functions that support the development of speech.
  • 4.-5. Selected areas of indicative diagnosis of speech development from the perspective of language planes.
  • 6.-7. Special educational methods and forms of support for the development of language and speech skills of children.
  • 8. Communication skills of the pedagogue, speech pattern.
  • 9. Planning and implementation of activities to promote the development of natural speech.
  • 10.-11. Methodology of reeducation of delayed speech development.
  • 12. Methodology of dyslalia reeducation.

Teacher's information
In course of continuous study, students use the study material, processing it to fulfil selected correspondence assignments which will be discussed in conclusion of the course. At the exam, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and lectures of the in-person instruction. Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually or in teams, via e-mail, or in consultations upon request.
