Course objectives
The course is an introduction to nursing care of the basic human need: nourishment. It provides integrated information on nourishment and its significance for human well-being. It presents hazards of malnutrition and over-nutrition and differences in serving and dieting at an old age. It includes clinical statuses of nutritional disorders and enteral and parenteral ways of dieting in facilities as well as at home. The students shall receive knowledge and skills significant for clinical practice. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students know basic terminology and relations from the area of human nourishment and they can demonstrate the knowledge. Professional skills: The students able to apply the acquired knowledge to specific patients and clients. They can present basic nourishing recommendations, they master techniques and methods of enteral and parenteral nourishing. General ability: Students orientate themselves in the field of natural and therapeutic diets and in the system of dietetic measures. In cooperation with other medical professionals, they can help with implementation of an adequate nourishing condition of a wide range of patients and general public. Competence: Having finished the course, the students, in collaboration with a doctor, take care of an adequate condition of patients'/clients' nourishment and they provide required education.
Syllabus
  • 1. Nourishment and medical condition of a human being, diet condition determination.
    2. Diet composition and its nutritional value. Mineral matters and vitamins in a diet. Energetic balance control.
    3. (hunger, fullness). Physical activity and nourishment.
    4. Diets and a dietary system. Obesity. Malnutrition.
    5. Nourishment of children.
    6. Artificial nutrition, parenteral and enteral.
    7. Significance of nutrition for humans, food composition. Effects of chronic alcohol drinking and drug taking on the condition of nutrition.
    8. Disorders of chewing, swallowing, digestion and absorption. Chronic disorders affecting food intake.
    9. Administration of nutrition through tubes. Administration of nutrition through infusions. Administration of nutrition to PEG. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia.
    10. Dangers of dietary disorders for hospitalized patients, diets for the oncologically diseased.

Teacher's information
Credit requirements: Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks. Presentation of a selected topic in seminar practical session.
Elaboration of a nursing care plan. Plea for and analysis of a seminar essay. Passing of a written test, cut-off score: 80 %.
