Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide basic information about the field of penology especially against the background of the current situation in the Czech prison system and its incorporation into the European context. Students will be familiar with the rules, the organizational structure of the Prison Service, the current problems of prison staff and other issues of penitentiary theory and practice. Emphasized also the role of the Probation and Mediation Service and other entities postpenitentiary welfare collaborating with people across the imprisonment of their social reintegration into civilian life.

  • 1. Concept, subject and importance of penology.
    2. Philosophy of goals and imprisonment, the purpose of remand, the effectiveness of enforcement.
    3. Historical context of punishment.
    4. Professional terminology in the treatment of convicted persons.
    5. Legal regulations on remand.
    6. Legal finish imprisonment.
    7. Accompanying negative effects of imprisonment.
    8. Exercise of preventive detention.
    9. Post-Penitentiary social care in the Czech Republic.
    10. Mission and Objectives of Probation and Mediation Service.
    11. Task, organization and management of the Prison Service.
    12. Personnel of prisons - admissions, demands on the professional and moral character.
