Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide students with comprehensive information about the pedagogical discipline of special pedagogy / geronthagogy. Students can orientate themselves in the historical development of care for handicapped in the context of current trends in access to seniors with disabilities. An integral part of the subject is also to understand the functioning of families with the handicapped human and to the attitudes of the society, including legislative anchoring. Students will be acquainted with the methods of special geronthology, they will be able to understand the specificity of the senior with disabilities: visual, hearing, mental, physical, combined or impaired communication ability.
Syllabus
  • 1st. Special gerontagogy in the system of pedagogical sciences, the aim and subject field. The status of special education in the science system. Breakdown of Special Education. Current trends in the treatment of persons with disabilities. Basic concepts (defect, defectivity, impaired socialization, integration and inclusion). System of care for people with disabilities in adulthood and old age. Legislation about care of people with disabilities.
    2. Historical development of care for disabled people. Current trends in access to people with disabilities. Family with a disabled person. The attitudes of the society to people with disabilities. Attitudes of the disabled people to society, which are reflected in the behavior and the experience of seniors with disabilities.
    3rd. Socialization process of disabled people, psychological impact of acquired disability during life. Mission of civic nonprofit organizations, social participation in care.
    4. Special-pedagogical diagnostics of persons with disabilities in senior age. Research strategies and approaches.
    5. Personality of the person with disabilities, the specificity of the development with an emphasis on the specifics of people in senior age.
    6. People with visual impairment, classification of disability, etiology. Specificity of development of individuals with visual impairment. Loss of sight in adulthood. Psychological peculiarities. Compensation aids. Principles of communication.
    7. People with mental handicap- terminology, classification, etiology. Psychological traits of people with intellectual disabilities. Educational and advisory institutes. Principles of communication.
    8th People with impaired communication abilities. Basic terminology logopedic, classification, etiology. Impaired communication ability. Tools and technical means for people with impaired communication ability. Special methods of speech therapy of aphasia. Organization of logopedics´care.
    9. People with hearing problems. Surdopaedia - terminology, classification, etiology. Psychological traits of people with hearing disabilities. Assistive devices. Compensation aids. Principles of communication. Educational and advisory institutes. Hearing loss in adulthood and old age as special pedagogical problem and possible solutions.
    10. People with mobility disorders. Somatopaedia - terminology, classification, etiology. Specificity of the development of people with physical disabilities. Compensation aids. Communication principles. Physical disability arising during life and special pedagogical methods of working with these people.
    11. Combined disabilities. Basic overview of terminology, etiology and methods of work. The resulting combined disability throughout life, psychological traits. Alternative and augmentative communication.

Teacher's information
Students use the study support during the course, they will work out selected correspondence tasks that will be discussed at the exam. At the same time, they will demonstrate the knowledge of compulsory literature and lectures. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied subject topics by e-mail, individual or group consultations.
