Course objectives
Integration of a new professional in helping professions is a process that systematically advances from pregraduate professional study and is largely dependent on educational processes - (theoretical instruction and clinical practice for prospective nurses). Emotional aspects of professional development have so far been underestimated in the latter process. Former curricula lacked adequate implementation of systematic handling of attitudes, ethical dilemmas, personal experiences and perceptions, i.e., the experience portfolio was not intentionally accumulated. The Psychosocial support system for nurses course is directed toward filling in the latter part of the ´zero curriculum´ and toward teaching prospective nurses to handle reflection, self-reflection, critical thinking and creativity, as well as to integrate into the profession and launch upon an appropriate lifestyle as a way of preventing burn-out and facilitating lifelong anchoring of the nurse in their profession. The discipline of nursing employs the following support systems: mentoring, preceptoring (in the Czech Republic also known as the ´adaptation process´), supervision, coaching, mediation etc. The course covers selected support systems (mentoring, preceptoring, supervision and reflective practice) that appear useful for prospective nurse graduates entering clinical practice. Graduates will likely face the need for support systems both as subjects and objects. The course units are distributed across the curriculum and are based on experiential learning and active participation. The course output does not consist in academic knowledge, but primarily in experience, perception of choices and solutions, personal mental hygiene and better understanding of patient´s and own emotions. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student defines the adaptation process, its stages and their idea of entering the nursing career. Professional skills: The student is able to describe their own emotions and attitudes relative to their authentic experience of nursing practice. They are able to analyze and reflect nursing issues and own position in these issues. They are capable of finding viable alternative solutions both independently and in a team. The student has a perception of own success in the team and of possible failure in resolving professional and interpersonal problems in the team. The student is able to integrate the experience in their experience portfolio. The student is able to realistically evaluate their professional capacity and power and to effectively implement the latter. The student is able to discuss, ponder and reflect the limitations and risks of nursing. General ability: The student demonstrates fitness for providing support to patients and their relatives, as well as to less experienced members of the team as a ´co-mentor´. The student premeditates their own decisions in terms of consequences, especially for target populations referred to as ´fragile´ (children, the elderly, persons with mental illness, persons dependent on caregivers and institutions, homeless persons, refugees etc.) The student relates their own satisfaction with nursing studies and is looking forward to their nursing career, actively considering their future. Competence: The student develops and deepens their capacity for self-reflection and emotional work/management in clinical settings using psychosocial support systems.
Syllabus
  • Following the completion of clinical practice, a one-day meeting based on group supervision with the faculty member in charge of clinical practice will be organized (as an intramural session or in a clinical setting, depending on local conditions). The meeting represents a reflection of clinical practice and comentoring and current professional experience, discussing major issues and preparing the student for the adaptation process in their nursing career.
