Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand the basic terms and concepts from the theory of communication. Based on the strategy of social conduct and knowledge of interpersonal communication. The students are familiar with the specific procedures of communication workers in the helping professions. Attention is also paid to the actual communication skills and conflict prevention, and aggression in interpersonal relationships. At the same time is the emphasis placed on the use of the techniques of active listening and empathy in the management consultancy interview. The aim is to develop a theoretical framework for the practical use of communication strategies in social communication. An integral part of the course are practical seminars.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to: - use to summarize basic terms and concepts from the field of communication theory; - apply specific communication procedures; - use communication skills in conversation; - prevent communication conflicts through communication strategies; - use active listening techniques; - conduct a counseling interview;

  • 1. Personality requirements and professional competences of a worker in helping professions. Specifics of communication in helping professions.
  • 2. Assumptions and principles of counseling work, errors in counseling work. Burnout syndrome and helping syndrome, supervision.
  • 3. Introduction to communication, concepts, content and relational level of communication.
  • 4. Communication process, structure, obstacles, recommendations.
  • 5. Non-verbal communication, components, voice hygiene, recommendations.
  • 6. Verbal communication, meaning, content of speech. Questions - types. Recommendations for optimizing verbal communication.
  • 7. Non-verbal communication. The body language. Image.
  • 8. Active listening, techniques.
  • 9. Empathy. The emotional intelligence.
  • 10. Counseling interview, phases, recommendations.
  • 11. Approaches for difficult types of clients.

The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
Teacher's information
Within the seminar work, the student will process according to the instructions of the teacher the specifics of communication with the selected target group in the range of 3 standard pages with the help of professional literature, it is necessary to use min. 2 sources, ie 1 compulsory and 1 recommended book. Part of the written work is the analysis of the interview, which the student records and completes as an activity during the seminar. For the seminar, the student prepares a recording of an interview with another person (fictitious client). The student submits the written work to the IS SU submission office within the set deadline. Any comments must be incorporated by the student into the correction and submitted within the specified deadline. After recognition of the work, the student can take a credit test. Work that does not meet the requirements will not be recognized and the student cannot participate in the credit test. The course ends with a written credit test. 75% success is required to obtain the credit.
