Course objectives
The course objective is to introduce the theory and also, in part, to the practice of education of the mentally disabled, focusing on the subject of basic theoretical psychopedic matters, and on a new perspective on working with mentally disabled persons in an inclusive society. The course also includes the definition of disability and its categorization, etiology and symptomatology, history of care for mentally disabled persons in the world and in the Czech Republic, reflection on the direction and characteristics of the personality of a mentally disabled person.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students are well versed in the scientific disciplines of psychopedia, they can classify and characterize it
- students knows the basic theoretical concepts and terminology of psychopedia
- students are familiar with the terminology which relate to mental disability
- students can define and characterize the degrees, types and kinds of mental disability according to different classifications
- students are well versed in the history and development of care for mentally disabled persons in the course of history in the Czech Republic and abroad
- students know the basic education system and educational opportunities for students with varying degrees and types of mental disability
- students can define special educational methods and principles related to the education of mentally disabled persons
Professional Skills:
- students can assess the educational opportunities of our educational system in regard to the degree of intellectual disability of the pupil
- students analyzes the personality of a person with mental retardation according to the basic rules and knowledge of the characteristics of personality in general form
General qualification:
- students can assess the skills and abilities of a mentally disabled person according to different classification criteria
- students can customize the process of working for a specific person with a certain degree of mental retardation
- students are familiar with the diversity of the educational system which is used for children and pupils with mental disabilities
- students know and can modify the special education methods useful in working with mentally disabled persons
Syllabus
  • 1. Psychopedia as special pedagogical discipline. The position of psychology in the system of sciences. Conceptual definition and terminology in psychopedia. The concept of mental disability and mental retardation. Past and present terminological expressions of psychopedia in the international context.
  • 2. Development of care for mentally disabled persons in the Czech Republic and abroad. Current foreign and domestic trends directed at education and inclusion of mentally disabled persons in society.
  • 3. Humanisation of living conditions of mentally disabled persons, the rights and discrimination in the context of current legislation.
  • 4. Characteristics of the personality of mentally disabled people in a comprehensive approach.
  • 5. Family with disabled children.
  • 6. Educational reality - education and training of children and pupils with mental disabilities.
  • 7. Types and degrees of mental disability, border region as a phenomenon.
  • 8. Etiology of mental retardation.
  • 9. Educational opportunities for children and pupils with learning disabilities - the types and kinds of institutions and schools. Fundamentals of the didactics of mentally disabled persons (principles, methods).
  • 10. Pupil with mental disability at school. The conditions and principles of special education school work within the framework of special and inclusive education.
  • 11. Autism spectrum disorders, education of children and pupils with ASD.
  • 12. Excursion to a facility for individuals with mental disabilities.

Assessment methods
Review of a film with a psychopathic theme. Written test, 70% of correct answers are required to pass the course.

Teacher's information
Personal contact in teaching, consulting hours. During continuous study, the student uses the study support and processes selected correspondence tasks. Here he will also demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and contact teaching lectures. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied topics of the subject through e-mail, individual or group consultations.
