Course objectives
The course objective is to introduce the theory and also, in part, to the practice of education of the mentally disabled, focusing on the subject of basic theoretical psychopedic matters, and on a new perspective on working with mentally disabled persons in an inclusive society. The course also includes the definition of disability and its categorization, etiology and symptomatology, history of care for mentally disabled persons in the world and in the Czech Republic, reflection on the direction and characteristics of the personality of a mentally disabled person. It introduces the concepts of autism spectrum disorder, dementia, Down's syndrome, focuses on the possibilities of using alternative and augmentative forms of communication and therapeutic methods and approaches.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students are well versed in the scientific disciplines of psychopedia, they can classify and characterize it
- students knows the basic theoretical concepts and terminology of psychopedia
- students are familiar with the terminology which relate to mental disability
- students can define and characterize the degrees, types and kinds of mental disability according to different classifications
- students are well versed in the history and development of care for mentally disabled persons in the course of history in the Czech Republic and abroad
- students know the basic education system and educational opportunities for students with varying degrees and types of mental disability
- students can define special educational methods and principles related to the education of mentally disabled persons
the student can define alternative and augmentative forms of communication related to the education of individuals with mental disabilities - the student orients himself in the basic range of therapeutic methods used and recommended in the education of individuals with mental disabilities Professional Skills:
- students can assess the educational opportunities of our educational system in regard to the degree of intellectual disability of the pupil
- students analyzes the personality of a person with mental retardation according to the basic rules and knowledge of the characteristics of personality in general form
- the student can assess appropriate forms of alternative and augmentative communication to the degree of mental disability of the individual and therapeutic methods General qualification:
- students can assess the skills and abilities of a mentally disabled person according to different classification criteria
- students can customize the process of working for a specific person with a certain degree of mental retardation
- students are familiar with the diversity of the educational system which is used for children and pupils with mental disabilities
- students know and can modify the special education methods useful in working with mentally disabled persons the student orients himself in the forms of alternative and augmentative communication that are used in the education of individuals with mental disabilities - the student knows the most common therapeutic methods used in the education of individuals with mental disabilities.
Syllabus
  • 1. Psychopedia as a special pedagogical discipline. Terminology, characteristics of the field, its subject, goals, position of psychotherapy in the system of other sciences. 2. Mental disability – terminology, classification, characteristics of categories, causes of mental disability and possibilities of prevention of mental disability. Autistic spectrum disorders - definition, brief characteristics. 3. Dementia and socially conditioned mental disabilities: concept, terminology, causes, types, manifestations. Intervention and therapeutic support for people with dementia. 4. Down syndrome – characteristics, etiology, classification and personality specifics. 5. Historical development of care for persons with mental disabilities to the present day, important personalities with the main focus on the territory of our state. 6. Rights and support of people with intellectual disabilities: From early childhood to adulthood. Institutions of social services, non-state non-profit organizations, current legislation. 7. Family and child with mental disabilities, professional support for families. Specifics in the field of behavior of individuals with mental disabilities from early age to adulthood. 8. Counseling services for children and pupils with mental disabilities within the school and educational system. 9. Possibilities for the education of children and pupils with mental disabilities - types and types of institutions and schools. Overview of legislation. Basics of didactics for people with mental disabilities (principles, methods). 10. Characteristics of framework educational programs for preschool and basic education. Pedagogical, psychological and social aspects of joint education of individuals with mental disabilities. Conditions and principles of special pedagogical school work within special and inclusive education. 11. Educational and professional training of young people with mental disabilities. Possibilities of personal and professional employment of persons with mental disabilities. 12. Therapeutic methods for people with mental disabilities. Alternative and augmentative communication.

Assessment methods
Activity in teaching (discussion, group work, etc.). PP presentation on the selected field of education and training of individuals with mental disabilities and its submission is a condition for registering for the exam. The didactic test is aimed both at the theoretical knowledge of key concepts related to the education of individuals with mental disabilities, as well as the ability to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge into pedagogical practice.
