Course objectives

The aim of the course is to equip students with didactic competencies for applying the principles of speech and language therapy prevention in its broadest conception (primary, secondary, and tertiary). Attention will be devoted to the application of forms and progressive methods and means of developing language and speech skills, with an emphasis on intensive stimulation of specific skills and cognitive functions. The issues will be addressed from the perspective of applying a comprehensive approach to the development of language and speech skills, including the coordination of professional speech and language therapy care.

Professional knowledge:

  • The student defines professional terminology and the principles of speech and language therapy prevention;
  • The student defines selected areas of speech and language therapy prevention;
  • The student explains the principles of a comprehensive approach to the development of language and speech skills in early and preschool age;
  • The student is oriented in the structure of counseling services within the relevant sectors.



Professional skills:

  • The student applies knowledge of supporting specific skills and cognitive functions;
  • The student recognizes the symptoms of disability in the context of speech and language therapy prevention;
  • The student implements a preventive stimulation program for the development of language and speech skills.



General competencies:

  • The student is able to stimulate the development of specific skills and cognitive functions using appropriate didactic means in order to support pupils’ speech and language development in primary education;
  • The student is able to independently formulate and present achieved results and, if necessary, reflect them in everyday practice;
  • The student is able to define tasks for professional activities, coordinate them, and take final responsibility for their outcomes.
Syllabus

Content: Speech and language therapy intervention, organization of speech and language therapy care in the Czech Republic. A comprehensive approach to the development of language and speech skills. Principles of speech and language therapy prevention. Specific skills and cognitive functions supporting speech development. Selected areas of screening diagnostics of speech development. Special education methods and forms of support for the development of children’s language and speech skills. Didactic means for the development of speech and language. Teacher’s communication competence and speech model. Planning and implementation of activities supporting the natural development of speech.

  • Reproductive methods (reproductive work with text, conversation in the sense of asking questions during consolidation and revision of the subject matter);
