Course objectives
Students will be familiarized with the development of educational thought from antiquity to the first half of the 20th century and more attention is devoted to history education in the Czech lands from the 9th century to first half of the 20th century. Students will gain knowledge from the development of educational theories and opinions of personalities representing the educational guidelines, or creating their own educational direction. The instruction will focus on finding historical and contemporary context of socio-pathological phenomena, occurring intermingled and historic development. Emphasis will be placed in the context of the present time, not only in terms of education, but education in general.
Syllabus
  • 1. The history of pedagogy as a scientific discipline.
    2. Ancient education and its major personalities - the Spartan´s and Athenian´s educational system, Socratic dialogue - the possibility of application in the present social and ethical relativism in the social sciences today, Plato's and Aristotle's views on education and society, the Roman utilitarianism vs. philosophical concept of utilitarianism.
    3. Education in the Middle Age. Church schools. Knight education. Scholastica.
    4. Renaissance Education - the contribution da Feltreho thoughts on education in leisure time, the analysis of works by F. Rabelais and possibilities of his thoughts on education in practice, analysis of the works of E. Rotterdam, and the validity of his views on education and training, women in the educational system of J. L. Vives, linking theory and practice of views of Renaissance teachers.
    5. Educational reform and counter-Reformation - the contribution of Jan Hus in the field of education, M. Luther and his contribution to education and training, Jesuit education - pros and cons, risks arising from a Jesuit cosmopolitanism in analogy with contemporary globalization.
    6. Jan Amos Comenius - Comenius link today, characteristic of the game as a means of education by Comenius ideas of possible applications today, compared with the Comenius school rules of procedure of the selected school today.
    7. Teaching Thinking 17th and 18th Century - John Locke - a tabula rasa, the advantages and disadvantages of individual education, the use of atypical toys in working with children, according to J. Locke and capabilities of atypical use of toys to work with children in the present, Moral Education by J. Locke. Jean Jacques Rousseau - an analysis of the work of Emil or education, the pros and cons of Rousseau's ideas, the analogy with today's knowledge.
    8. Filantropismus and humanistic education - J. B. Basedow and application of his ideas in the current educational system, education, and J. H. Pestalozzi - his legacy in the form of humanist pedagogy, teaching ideas.
    9. German and Russian Education 19th century - Diesterweg´s conception of education, the teaching principles applicable in the present, Diesteweg´s link to social pedagogy. J. F. Herbart - educational classes, 4 formal levels, the pros and cons Herbart´s views herbartism characters in the current educational and training system. Froebel and the benefits of preschool education. L. N. Tolstoj - free school, the application of educational experience in the current educational system, the pros and cons of Tolstoj's concept of free schools. K. D. Ušinskij and innovative views on education and training, the importance of physiology for pedagogy, the importance of mother tongue as a basis for learning other subjects
    10. Education system in the Czech Republic - a monastery, cathedral, parish, guild, mercantile and urban schools, the social status of teachers (educators), the Unity of Brethren school system, educational reforms by M. Teresa and Joseph II., formation of institutions providing leisure activities for children and youth, information on the socio-pathological phenomena in the school order of 19th century and to compare the current school systems, the development of Czech education system in the years 1774 - 1938.
    11. Development of the Czech educational thinking from the patriotic to the present day teachers - J. L. Ziegler and his timeless ideas in relation to the Czech language spoken (haplology), pedagogical link J. N. J. Filcík, meaning G. A. Lindner for social pedagogy and pedagogical activities, the importance of interdisciplinary links with reference to O. Chlup, validity of ideas about education O. Kadner, A. B. Svojsík and its importance for outschool education, V. Prihoda advantages of reform ideas
