Course objectives
The course objective is to understand the principles of volunteer work with the elderly and motivation for it, as well as theoretical preparation for volunteer work both from the volunteer’s and from the volunteering management point of view. Students become familiar with the specifics of volunteering work with the elderly and they are provided room for discussion and practical verification of their findings.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge: Students acquire and demonstrate knowledge of basic principles of volunteer work and its history in the Czech Republic and become familiar with the opportunities for and barriers to volunteering. They will be well versed on the legislative anchoring of volunteer work in the Czech Republic and the issues of volunteering centres and organizations focused on work with seniors in which volunteer work is carried out.

Professional skills: Students are well versed in the methodology of acquisition, preparation and registration of volunteers. Students will be prepared to participate in volunteering management, well acquainted with the possibilities of rewarding volunteers, interactions among volunteers, employees and the public in the area of volunteering work with the elderly.

General qualification: Students are able to perceive the social importance and necessity of volunteer work, especially in the area of volunteer work with the elderly. Having completed the course, students will be qualified not only to use their knowledge and skills for specific volunteering work with the elderly, but also to better respond to the needs of clients and of the organization’s working team members. Methods of the course instruction will support students’ orientation on volunteer work with the elderly.
Syllabus
  • 1. Volunteering, concept, principles of volunteering in work with seniors
  • 2. Types of volunteering, areas of volunteering. Volunteering in the United States, Europe, international volunteer organization dedicated to working with the elderly
  • 3. The Universal Declaration on Volunteering, volunteering legislation in the Czech Republic
  • 4. The history of volunteering in the Czech Republic with an emphasis on volunteer work with the elderly
  • 5. Opportunities and barriers to volunteering in the Czech Republic, volunteering centres, organizations and projects, the strengths and weaknesses of volunteering with the elderly
  • 6. The personality of a volunteer and specific requirements in working with the elderly. Burnout syndrome in volunteer work with the elderly, supervision
  • 7. Methodology of acquisition, preparation, registration and supervision of volunteers, communication with volunteers, communication possibilities - communication difficulties - situational contexts in volunteer work with the elderly
  • 8. Volunteering management. Rewarding volunteers and the possibility of rewarding, interaction between volunteers and non-volunteers. Relationships employee - volunteer - supporter - the public
  • 9. Methodology of work with volunteers working with seniors. Preparation of organization and selection of activities for volunteers, volunteer coordinator, selection and training of volunteers who will work with the elderly
  • 10. Seniors as volunteers. Motivation, target and stimulation. Motivation of seniors in volunteering activities. Volunteering benefits for seniors
  • 11–13. Examples of activities of volunteering centres working with the target group of seniors. Examples of volunteering programmes focused on volunteering with the elderly
