Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the currently used compensatory and rehabilitation aids for people with disabilities, both theoretically and especially practically. The theoretical input of this subject is the definition of barriers and the need to set compensation processes and the provision of compensation aids. The groups we particularly focus on are people with physical and sensory disabilities and those with multiple disabilities at the same time.
Learning outcomes
Expertise:
- the student should define barriers that are related to the quality of life of persons with severe degrees of disability
- the student should clarify the principles and mechanisms that are generally related to the use of compensatory aids in the sense of improving the quality of life and supporting the independence of a person with a disability
- the student knows the connections between the special needs of specific groups of people with disabilities
- the student can explain and name the laws that lead to the use of compensatory aids, as well as the consequences related to the lack of use of compensatory aids
- the student knows the context of the provision of compensatory aids within the framework of various levels of support measures
Specific expertise:
- the student orients himself in the basic types of compensatory aids for persons with physical and sensory disabilities
- the student knows the connections between the special needs of individual groups of people with disabilities and specific aids
- the student knows the aids for enabling movement, independence and selected leisure activities
- the student can divide aids according to the degree of disability within individual groups of people with disabilities
Professional skills:
- the student can handle selected compensatory and rehabilitation aids
- the student can apply counseling regarding compensatory and rehabilitation aids
- the student can provide instruction in the use of special aids and didactic materials
- the student should introduce compensatory aids into the teaching of individual pupils and present the application to other actors in education (teachers, parents, assistants)
Specific professional skills:
- the student can independently use compensatory aids for persons with physical and sensory disabilities, or with multiple disabilities simultaneously
- the student knows the differences between the selected compensatory aids, which differ, e.g. in terms of use according to the degree of disability or its type
- the student can apply his knowledge about the special needs of people with disabilities to the selection of a compensatory aid and its use
- the student can provide advice regarding the use of compensatory aids in special elementary schools, or to improve the quality of life of persons with more severe degrees of disability
General qualifications:
- the student is able to purposefully use his knowledge and skills regarding the special needs of people with disabilities in the application, support and selection of compensatory and rehabilitation aids
- the student can independently decide to specifically support a person with a disability using compensatory and rehabilitation aids and technology
- the student can provide care and support regarding the provision of compensatory aids for an individual person

  • 1. Barriers in the life of a person with a disability. The history of barriers and the history of the first compensatory aids in practice in the Czech Republic and abroad
  • 2. Compensation and rehabilitation aids and their goals and focus, differentiation for persons with disabilities. Practical connections with securing quality compensation aids
  • 3. A person with a movement disability and a person with a severe simultaneous disability with multiple disabilities and their need to use compensatory and rehabilitation aids during the day
  • 4. Aids for movement and relocation
  • 5. Aids for the development of independence and self-care
  • 6. Aids for the development of leisure activities and sports activities
  • 7. A person with a visual impairment and related compensatory aids of a re-educational or purely compensatory nature
  • 8. A person with a hearing impairment and related compensatory aids of a re-educational or purely compensatory nature
  • 9. A person with dual sensory impairment and the specifics of compensatory aids
  • 10. Technical aids and applications for the development of communication, especially for persons with multiple disabilities

Assessment methods
Activity in teaching (discussion, group work, etc.). Elaboration of a seminar paper on the topic Application of compensatory or rehabilitation aids in special pedagogic practice. Submission of a seminar paper and its assessment of at least 50 points is the criterion for completing this subject. The form of the method of verification of study results: written seminar work.

Teacher's information
Personal contact in lessons, consultation hours. During ongoing studies, the student uses study support and processes selected correspondence tasks. Here, at the same time, he will demonstrate his knowledge of compulsory literature and contact teaching lectures. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied subject topics via e-mail, individual or group consultations. The subject has an e-learning course prepared in IS SU and a team established in MS Teams, which also serves as another possible tool for communication with the teacher and between students.
