Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with insight into the family, its development, the formation of relationships within the family, etc. The course is based on the basic characteristics of the family in history and contemporary Czech society, defines its functions, especially focusing on the educational function. Attention will be paid to the organization and atmosphere of the family, general educational functions and functions that make education difficult. Attention will be focused on the effect of adequate educational resources, factors that affect the functioning of the family, etc.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to: - identify and summarize important features of family change - describe family functions and parenting styles - understand issues related to family and divorce, single-parent families, families with step-parents and step-siblings, foster care, family care, families with abused, exploited, and neglected children, domestic violence, children, childhood, and child development
Syllabus
1. The family and its functions. Typology of families. Signs of a contemporary Czech family. Basic concepts 2. Theory of the family. Partnership. Cohabitation alternatives 3. Development of partnership, marriage in terms of time 4. Family and crisis. Marriage and internal and external marital situations. Parenting, parental attitudes and roles in the family 5. Family functionality, parenting disorders, family disorders 6. Education in the family, the family and its functionality. Education, educational style, method of education 7. Family and Divorce. Forms of dissolution of marriage. Child at the time of divorce. Raising a child after a divorce. Family breakdown and a child. Disputes about children. Abandoned parent syndrome. Searching for a partner after divorce, second partnerships, marriages and their breakups. Grandparents and divorce 8. Family with one parent, families with a step-parent and step-siblings. Parenting and stepfamily 9. Substitute family education (care), surrogate parenting. Substitute family care system. Parenting and surrogate family. Foster care and grandparents. Surrogate parenthood - a question of motivation. The arrival of a child in the family 10. The family and the abused, abused and neglected child. Domestic violence. 11. Child, childhood and its development. Parents and children - relationship. Stages of getting to know a child - a historical perspective. Childcare - a non-governmental organization
