- Course objectives
- The course creates basic knowledge prerequisites for understanding the nature of contemporary integration processes and the degrees of their development in the world economy, respectively on individual continents. It introduces students to the motives and theoretical models of integration, as well as to globalization and regional integration processes. Last but not least, it deals with integration tendencies in the history of the Czech state.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be familiar with the development of integrations in all parts of the world and identify their basic differences. She/he will be able to identify the most important integration trends in the world, including specific integration groupings.
- Syllabus
- 1. The concept of integration, theoretical models of integration processes and degrees of economic integration
Political and economic motives of integration processes. Lines and forms of integration. Integration models and stages of integration. Functionalism and institutionalism in the theory of integration processes. Individual representatives of integration theory and their theories.
2. Globalization and regionalization in integration processesConcept of globalization. Factors and carriers of globalization and its main features. Subjects and levels of global integration. Consequences of globalization for integration processes. Concept of regionalization. Intra-regional and inter-regional integration processes. Mega-regional and supra-regional integration. Relationship between the globalization process and regional integrations.
3. Integration processes in Central and Eastern EuropeDevelopment of integration processes in Central and Eastern European countries – Comecon, its creation, course of activity, and dissolution. Transformation processes in these economies and new integration groupings. The Visegrád Four. CEFTA. Customs union between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. CIS and the Baltic states grouping. Relation of these groupings to the EU.
4. Integration processes in Western EuropeOrganization for European Economic Cooperation. European Free Trade Association. European Economic Area. Western European Union. Development of the European Union – ECSC, EEC, EC, EU, EMU. The present and future of European integration.
5. Integration processes on the American continentSpecifics of integration processes in developing countries. Characteristics of the region. Integration in the North American region. Central American and Caribbean integration processes. Integration processes in South America.
6. Integration processes on the African continentIntegration processes on the African continent
Regional characteristics. Historical development of African integrations and their specifics. West African integrations. East African integrations. Central and Southern African integration efforts.
7. Arab integration processes and pan-African integration
Regional characteristics. Arab Maghreb Union. Pan-African integration. United Arab Emirates. Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
8. Integration processes in Asia and the Pacific
Regional characteristics of Asia and the Pacific. Regional integration processes in Asia. Regional integration processes in the Pacific. Intercontinental integration – APEC and IOR-ARC.
