Course objectives
The aim of this subject is to familiarize students with the basic issues of microeconomics, as a basic part of economics and at the same time a scientific discipline. Students will be introduced to the issues of the market and exchange, including their elements, as well as the decision-making processes of consumers, firms and their mutual interaction. Furthermore, students will gain knowledge about different types of competitive markets, such as perfect competition, oligopoly, monopoly or monopolistic competition, which they may encounter in real life. Last but not least, students will gain knowledge in the market of production factors - land, labor and capital and the role of the state in the economy.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to identify the basic issues of microeconomics; identify and describe different types of competitive environment; describe the decision-making processes of consumers and firms; apply economic principles to a practical problem; describe the role of the state in the economy.
Syllabus
  • 1. A basic introduction to the subject of economics
    Definition of basic terms and economic relations in theoretical and practical terms. Basic principles of economics and the role of models in economics. Breakdown of the economy. Basic used methods and tools of economic analysis. Overview of economic theories in relation to microeconomic issues.
    2. The essence of the market and exchange
    The existence of the necessity of exchanging activities between people and the resulting definition of the space in which the exchange takes place, i.e. the market. Basic division of markets into individual types. Economic cycle from the point of view of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Economic entities, i.e. households, companies and the state. Theoretical foundations of basic elements such as supply and demand (individual, partial and aggregate), price and competition.
    3. The consumer and his preferences
    The consumer as a basic element of the market and his choice. The effect of budget constraints on consumer choice. Benefit and individual approaches to measuring benefit from consumption. The issue of optimal consumer choice. Alternative approaches to measuring consumer optimality. Derivation of individual demand curves and the firm and the production process
    The essence of the operation of the company and its limitations. Stages of the production process associated with  productivity and volume of production. The importance of production factors and technology in the company's activity and finding its optimum. Income, costs and profit of the company from the point of view of economic theory in different time periods.
    5. The firm from the point of view of different types of competitive markets
    Basic characteristics of individual types of competitive markets from the point of view of theory and practice. The functioning of the firm in a perfectly competitive market and the firm's decision-making. Examples of its imperfectly competitive market (monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition) and their functioning in practice.
    6. Markets of production factors - land, labor, capital
    Characteristics of individual production factors and their prices. Specifics of the market of production factors: land market, labor market and capital market. The labor market and the functioning of trade unions. Capital goods and their forms. Interest rate, savings and their importance Capital returns, present, future value and net present value of future income and their for deciding on investment options.
    7. The state and its role in the economy
    The state and its role in market failure, elimination of negative and support of positive effects of market failure. State function public choice. Public election mechanisms and subjects of the political market. Voting types, the median voter theorem, and the role of bureaucracy.
