Course objectives
Lectures reflect history of the theatre since the end of WWII till modern times. Attention will be focused on both the aesthetic and philosophical conception of theatre and drama in different periods, but also the development of forms of staging, set design and acting. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of world theatre in a variety of historical and cultural context. Students should have a broad understanding of the dramatic forms and theatre conventions.

    2. Existentialism and theatre (Sartre, Camus). The Theatre of the Absurd, Martin Esslin's theory of the Theatre of the Absurd. Representatives playwrights of the Theatre of the Absurd: Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, Arthur Adamov, Harold Pinter, Jean Genet, Slawomir Mrožek
    3. Theatre and drama in Germany and other German-speaking countries
    4. Illusion and disillusion as the theme od 20th century american drama: Eugene O´Neill, Arthur Miller, Thorthon Wilder, T. Williams, Edward Albee
    5. New tendencies in the theatre after World War II: the Second Theatre Reform
