Course objectives
The objective of the course is to introduce students to the nature and importance of management and its interdisciplinary characteristics, as well as to provide a brief overview of the development and current state of this discipline. Attention is focused on the content of managerial functions (basic, intermediate and security), on managerial behaviour. Management is understood as a system (organic unity of the structure and process of management). It includes the definition of the manager's mission, management styles and principles with reference to the use of modern information technology and communication in management systems.
Learning outcomes
Identify and summarize important features and characteristics of management; identify and describe significant trends in management; apply management principles to practical examples; design a management system for a specific organization.
Syllabus
  • 1. Historical development of management. The concept of management as a scientific discipline. Historical development of management theories. Important schools of management and their historical development. Significant decades of management as a scientific discipline.
    2. Modern approaches to management. Approaches to management and their changes in historical context. Contemporary approaches to management and the influence of of the business environment on the concept of management as a scientific discipline.
    3. Conceptual definition of management and design of organizational structure. Conceptual framework of management definition. The concept of management as a set of activities and a group of people. Definition basic concepts and definitions in the field of management and the concept of organisation. The essence of the management of the organization and its basic laws and relationships. Types of organizations and the structure of the concept of organization. Structure and levels of management in an organization. Design of organizational structure and its development over time.
    4. Concept of managerial functions. Attributes of management. Management functions and their conception in the past and present. Managerial functions Sequential (planning, organizing, controlling, leading people, managing people). Parallel managerial functions (decision making, analysis, implementation). Managerial security functions (material security, personnel security, information security).
    5. Management and leadership. Concepts of management and leadership. Differences in working with people between manager and leader. Motivation and motivational systems in organisations. New trends in motivating and stimulating employees. Characteristics of managing and leading people. Modern approaches to managing people (mentoring, coaching).
    6. Managerial competences. Managerial competence, its components and models of managerial competence. The field of soft and hard skills, knowledge, experience, knowledge and qualities of a manager. Competence models, their creation and current trends.
    7. Managerial techniques and approaches. Current and visionary methods, techniques and tools. Use of managerial techniques and approaches from the perspective of type and size of organisations. Management techniques and approaches implemented in an international environment. Impact of international environment on the use of management techniques and approaches.
